We have had hardly any wildflowers this year, but our pencil cactus did bloom.
The pencil cactus, (I don't know if this is its correct name, but it is the only name that we have known it by), is a favorite of the cactus wrens who build their nests within its thorny branches.

I think cactus is probably the only plant I can manage with my black thumb. Maybe when the kids are older I'll get some. I love the third picture, very artistic.
