Wordless Wednesday - Heron Lost in the Desert - June 26, 2013

We have no idea why this young Great Blue Heron passed our way the other day.  We figured he came from Salton Sea on his way to Big Bear? Lake Arrowhead?  Definitely off on the wrong track.

According to my National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds Western Region, these birds like lakes, ponds, rivers, and marshes.  There are some about 50 miles west of us in Victorville, CA.  Maybe that was where he was heading.  But young herons, such as the one that passed over us, fly wide territories looking for any pond, even your fish pond in your backyard, that has a supply of fish.
