Theatrical Thursday - Classic TV Shows for the Family - December 26, 2013

The following DVDs were provided to me in order for me to facilitate an honest review. No other form of compensation was exchanged. Regardless, all thoughts are my own honest opinions!

My family and I all love classic movies and TV shows including cartoons.   When I talk about classic, I mean from the 80s on back that are family friendly.  I was recently sent three very classic TV shows and cartoons that hail from the late 50s to the 60s.

Here's the classic of classics: The Twilight Zone.  Most of us know and love this great sci-fi series that started in 1959 and ended in 1964.  This great classic had the imaginative Rod Serling writing and narrating and starred different actor(s) in each episode.  Some of the stars that got a role in The Twilight Zone were: Art Carney, Burgess Meredith, Cliff Robertson, Dennis Hopper, Bill Bixby, Leonard Nimoy, Burt Reynolds, Don Rickles, Jack Klugman, Robert Redford, Lee Marvin, Martin Landau, Telly Savalas, William Shatner, and many others.

The Twilight Zone remains television's most treasured anthology program.  The brainchild of writer and narrator Rod Serling -- inspired by the pulp comics, novels and sci-fi films of his youth -- the series introduced its own special brand of weirdness to viewers on October 2, 1959.  As a program that correctly billed itself as one "of shadow and substance, of things and ideas," The Twilight Zone left indelible tracks -- not to mention unforgettable theme music -- and directors that included Don Medford, Douglas Heyes and Richard L. Bare.

We love to watch a marathon of The Twilight Zone at least once a year.  I don't think these episodes could ever be replaced by modern means.  You can find  all seasons and The Complete Definitive Collection of The Twilight Zone at Amazon.

The next classic TV show is COMBAT!COMBAT! hit the airwaves in 1962 and ended it's run in 1967.  My husband remembers watching this show, but I was way too young.   Starring the legendary Vic Morrow, Rick Jason, Pierre Jalbert, Jack Hogan and Dick Peabody, COMBAT! is a great drama based on WWII.

One of television's most popular series, the groundbreaking COMBAT! offers a gritty, unflinching look at American soldiers battling on the front lines in Europe during World War II, confronting imposing odds and demonstrating remarkable levels of ingenuity and courage. Vic Morrow and Rick Jason head a stellar cast in this long-running war drama featuring an incomparable list of guest stars as well as top directorial talent.

I have always loved watching war movies and TV shows, and COMBAT! is now a part of those.  It's a great show that rallies around the camaraderie and experiences of a bunch of hard fighting soldiers.  Vic Morrow really plays his part so well.  I was only able to get season 4 of COMBAT!, and we plan on getting the rest of the seasons.   Check out COMBAT! at Amazon, and you will find all the seasons and COMBAT!: The Complete Series, too.

After so many years, I finally got to introduce to my kids The New Three Stooges Complete Cartoon Collection which includes all 156 of The Stooges 1965 cartoons and all the live action shots before and after each cartoon.  Starring Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Joe DeRita, your children will get a laugh out of over 18 hours of Knucklehead Nonsense!

The New Three Stooges premiered in 1965 and featured animated cartoons with the voices of the Stooges – Larry, Moe and Curly Joe –  as well as real footage 'wraparounds' of the three comedy greats performing short skits to accompany the cartoons. Now, for the first time ever and marking the 49th  anniversary of the show, this collection features all 156 cartoons, plus all 40 live action sequences exactly as they originally aired. Perfect for collectors as well as the entire family, this special embossed package also includes a BONUS CD featuring 12 kids sing-along songs and 11 Christmas songs performed by the Stooges.

This is a real hit in the house.  It took a little while to watch them all, but we had so much fun sitting with the kids and watching this all together.  This brought back many happy memories for me because I remember watching the reruns of the classic cartoons.   For an incredible deal, you can get The New Three Stooges Complete Cartoon Collection at Amazon.

All three of these are family friendly TV shows, although I would recommend The Twilight Zone and COMBAT! for older children.  The New Three Stooges Complete Cartoon Collection is perfect for all ages.  All three of these great classic hits are free of foul language.

  1. I still LOVE The Twilight Zone! Great storytelling. And you'll see some stars "before they were stars". William Shatner was in a couple of episodes.
