As many of you know, tomorrow is the Epiphany of Our Lord, the day when the Three Wise Men came to bestow the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Do you know the meaning behind these three gifts?
The gift of Gold represented the gift given to royalty and so it represents the fact of Jesus as King in the line of David and King of the world and our hearts.
The gift of Frankincense represented the fact of Jesus' Divinity, since incense was and is used primarily in the worship of God.
The gift of Myrrh looks ahead to the death of Jesus, as myrrh was used for the anointing of the bodies of the dead.
Since gifts were given to the Newborn King, many people celebrate Epiphany as a Little Christmas, and sometimes small gifts are exchanged.
